When taken in high doses, nutmeg can be quite intoxicating, primarily because it is similar in chemical makeup to MDMA (Ecstasy).  Smoking nutmeg causes symptoms such as stupor, delirium, and drowsiness.  Other symptoms include increased heart rate, dry mouth, and excessive thirst.  Agitation, apprehension, and a sense of impending doom may last about 12 hours, with unreality that persists for days.

Nutmeg contains five to fifteen percent Myrista oil, which is responsible for the physical effects felt by the individual. About four percent is Myristicin, which is structurally similar to mescaline. Mace, the exterior covering of the Nutmeg seed, also contains the hallucinogenic compound Myristicin. Elemicin is another potent psychoactive ingredient found in nutmeg. Similar to SSRI antidepressants such as Prozac, Myristicin blocks the release of serotonin from brain neurons. Scientists believe that once the substance enters the body it is converted to methylenedioxymethamphetamine, which is Ecstasy.  There is a dosage threshold based on quantity, metabolism, and body weight that causes nutmeg to cease being a spice and enter the realm of being a drug. Like other deliriums, the effects of nutmeg take several hours to peak. Nutmeg is one of the most bizarre psychoactive drugs, because it often takes up to six hours before an individual even begins feeling minimal effects of the drug.

Many prison inmates have known about it and used it for years to get high, which is why most prisons have banned the use of this spice within the prison walls.  But, the nutmeg high is not all that pleasant.  Like most deliriums, nutmeg’s efficacy at producing a hallucinogenic high is largely in the eye of the beholder.

Because of its efficacy to produce a cheap and legal high, nutmeg is most often used by people who are unable to obtain illicit drugs.  So, yes, smoking nutmeg will get you high!
