The ingredient is what keeps smokers coming back is nicotine, as it is highly addictive. While it acts as a stimulant to the brain initially, in larger doses it is actually a central nervous system depressant. The high or elated feeling that the smoker gets from inhaling the nicotine is what makes them want more, so eventually their brain becomes so accustom to the high, it becomes dependent.
